Don't believe that the S.S. United States is NOT the fastest oceanliner to cross the Atlantic. The Brits cheated to reclaim the record. They used a boat which was NOT an oceanliner. Heck, it didn't even have paying passengers onboard when it "recaptured" the record.
The S.S. United States was a thing of beauty in its day.
After sitting in dock in Philadelphia for three decades, the grand old mistress of the sea is being pulled by tugboats to Mobile, Alabama to have any and all hazardous materials and fuel removed (a one-year process). Then, it will be towed off the coast of Okaloose County, Florida (think Destin) and sunk.
It will be sunk rightside up about twenty miles off the coast and one-hundred-eighty feet down. It will be the largest, and one of the most amazing, artificial reefs in the world. Eventually it will be a divers' and fishermen's paradise and will add millions to the county and state coffers.
I have a couple of videos below. One on the history of the boat, one brief news report on the project.
Enjoy!
