Are We Living On "Stolen Land?"

Long before Ben & Jerry's decided to make its obsolete ice cream even more so by telling us we need to give back "lands stolen from North American indians," the cry was part of the pre-reparations movement. In some cases, the lands in question were, in fact, bought and while many decry the price as the equivalent of swindling, I would argue we got far better terms historically for Alaska and several other large land deals made with foreign countries which claimed ownership.

Equally true is the fact that some of these lands were conquered by Spain, England, and, perhaps, others. Throughout history it is the way of the world. Read the greatest history book of all-time (and best-selling), the Bible. In fact, nations defend their territories to this day due to the longstanding reality of potential conquest by a foreign power.

But let's circle back to the original Ben & Jerry's claim (note the company does not offer its own headquarters which native Americans claim is on their land). A noted historian and author takes on the topic.
