I am an unashamed Seminole Booster.
While I, like many of you, lament the illiberal direction of many American colleges and universities (with very good reason), I submit the best of what universities offer these days can be found in athletic competition. I learned lessons from playing, and coaching, sports which were more impactful and have carried into my adult life far more than anything I ever learned in a classroom.
In short, that is why I support the Boosters. Athletics is self-supporting. No state of federal money supports the programs or the scholarships. No, I never attended Florida State University (though my wife earned her third degree from it), but I love the school as a whole. I would hope the tens of thousands of FSU alum who are in the area (You?) would consider dropping at least $70 a year (yes, a YEAR!) and become a Booster.
Here's my visit with Seminole Director of Athletics, Michael Alford. It was a wide-ranging discussion I think you will find insightful.
