FSU's Spring Game Recap - Warchant.com

Our buddy, (who will be my guest Monday at 8:05 AM (EST) Ira Schoffel and Corey Clark of Warchant.com offer a wrap of the annual Garnet and Gold game. Maybe a better way to put it is they offer Seminole fans reassurance - it's better.

How much? We will have to wait and see.

Now, I know its "just" the Spring game, but (based on texts I received from those at the game and my observations watching the embarrassing ACC Network broadcast...

  • Can we please fix the audio? The absurd sub-sonic, sub-woofer sound has long been an issue. Added to the problem on Saturday were echo/reverb issues which made commentary from Gene Deckerhoff (his last game as "Voice of the Noles") and Head Coach Mike Norvell unintelligible. One text I received, "...unbearable, it felt like I was stuck on that Willy Wonka boat going down that crazy river, couldn't understand a word..." BTW - this comment is from someone almost thirty years my junior. As for me, I am not a curmudgeon. I enjoy loud music and believe atmosphere enables, but it needs to be done right.
  • Sideline reporters inside the statdium (not broadcast) ought to be professionals or, at least, given some training before tossing them out there. It's unfair to them (or in this case him).
  • Why did the Spring Game turn into the NBA? One of the things I hate the most about the NBA is the decision to play music ALL - GAME - LONG while the ball is in play. I miss hearing sneakers, players calling out picks and screens, etc. Just the sounds of the game. Music playing during the scrimmage was annoying and totally unnecessary. Some may argue, "The players like to hear the jams!" I can promise you - not one player has Neil Diamond's "Sweet Caroline" blasting in his Beats. Best as I can tell, the NCAA still will not let music (live or recorded) be played during games, so I will write this off, but I think it hurts the atmosphere, which is under assault (see above), of the Spring Game.
  • The ACC broadcast was just terrible. I recorded it because I was watching The Masters, but after the little bit I watched and scanned thru I just hit the delete button.

The highwater mark, by far, was the Dunlap Champions Club. By more than a few accounts it was stellar. So, if you haven't made plans for next season it might be time to take a look.

In closing, FSU has to make a huge choice in the coming weeks and months. Who will follow Gene Deckerhoff as the play-by-play voice for football and basketball. There is one clear choice (no, not me...lol). It's Tom Block. I have known Tom for more than twenty years and, as a former play-by-play guy with a very informed opinion, I will tell you Tom is one of the best announcers out there...period. Pick the level - regional or national. He is always prepared, always professional, and he has been a loyal Seminole guy.

No disrespect to anyone else who may put their hat in the ring, there is no one even close to Tom (and his ability) who is deserving the job. He doesn't deserve the chance, he's earned that already. The job should be his, if he wants it.

In closing, it's going to be a much better season of Florida State football. Even if the headaches still come from the sound system, the product on the field is going to be improved.
