Taggart Talks! FSU Loses to Boise State in Opener

Here's Willie Taggart in his post game remarks courtesy of Warchant.com.

Here's my $50 worth of analysis (I think it's worth more than .02 cents):

  1. There's hope in the offense...
    1. IF QB James Blackman will accept the quick timing passes which open up the deep routes.
      1. James (could have been the OC, but my hunch is James) seemed to just chuck it deep in the second half and the offense lost it's momentum.
      2. I am not quite sure why the second half was so disjointed on offense. The Broncos adjusted their D and the Noles did not seem to anticipate it. Kendall Briles is a proven play caller. Just a puzzle.
    2. The quick tempo is great if you convert first downs, if you don't you sentence your defense to being on the field way too much (more than 100 plays...ugh).
    3. Cam Akers was good, but Khalan Laborn needs to be on the field much, much more.
    4. Much more discipline on offense...lined up and proper subs. There are some pluses for the offense, however...
  2. There's not as much hope on the defense...for now.
    1. We'll need to see in the long haul, but for now the switch to the 3-4 defense did not pay off.
      1. The line just did not win the point of attack. Granted, BSU is a very experienced offensive line, but they ran into the second level the entire game. Nothing stopped it.
      2. Terrible tackling the entire game.
      3. If I am the coaching staff I am having a serious sit-down with Dontavious Jackson. Cheap shot targeting of the BSU QB went uncalled, but it happened. That's dirty and has no place. Jackson was guilty of that kind of play too frequently last season. It seems he has not learned.
    2. The only way the defense was effective was with blitzes. Why it stopped I do not know because without pressure the DBs were unable to cover long enough just like last season.
    3. The secondary is just not very good. Maybe, the talent is there, perhaps not. What I can tell you is that the DBs do not tackle properly or well. No wrap up, just hits if their in the vicinity...lol. Wide open receivers all over the field all game long. Our secondary has plenty of attitude and trash talk, though. Too bad that counts for nothing and Boise State got the absolute last of it.
    4. This is not a case of the other guys adjusting...the Broncos just kept running their offense. Ran it for more than 100 plays and more than 600 yards. Yes, Boise State is a good football team, but it's not that good.

Now what happens? I predict a really low fan turnout for next week's official home opener against Louisiana-Monroe. There will be a win. To win back fans I think the Noles have to win four in a row and have some momentum heading to Clemson. Once in Death Valley FSU needs to avoid the beat down which happened last season at home. Be competitive.

Unless DC Harlon Barnett works some serious magic that could be a tall order.

Half the teams in college football lost their opener...sadly, Florida State was one of them.

Oh well, Go Noles!
