Yes, I loved the Mary Tyler Moore Show. The humor was not dark, or even blue. The cast was spectacular. Of course, it was set in a city I knew well, Minneapolis and that didn't hurt my interest. But, my willingness to watch as a teenager was established years earlier when I became a young fan of the Dick Van Dyke Show.
Mary played, Laura, the wife of Rob Petrie. Rob was the lead writer for a variety show and it's egotistical host. Again, the cast in this show was special. But, it was the relationship between Rob and his wife, Laura, which carried the show.
Mary Tyler Moore's gifts were abundant and the show, over the years, managed to show them all. Singer, dancer, actress, and one of the finest comedic actresses to ever grace any screen, large or small. The short scene I picked because she did. There would be no way for me to pick one because the program, to this day, stands as one of the finest shows television has ever given birth to. But, to Mary, this is one of the best scenes in the history of the show.
I promise you this...if you ever manage to stumble upon the Dick Van Dyke Show or the Mary Tyler Moore Show in reruns please sit down and watch them with your family. Somehow, you will be better for it and I think you will remember, or perhaps be introduced to, what it is like to just laugh.
