Trump Calls Sweden's Prime Minister to "Personally Vouch" for Rapper's Bail

President Donald Trump announced Saturday he had spoke with Sweden's Prime Minister about jailed rapper A$AP Rocky and that he had offered "to personally vouch for his bail," if he is released by Swedish authorities.

"Just had a very good call with @SwedishPM Stefan Löfven who assured me that American citizen A$AP Rocky will be treated fairly," Trump tweeted Saturday morning. "Likewise, I assured him that A$AP was not a flight risk and offered to personally vouch for his bail, or an alternative ... Our teams will be talking further, and we agreed to speak again in the next 48 hours!"

Trump took interest in the case after a conversation he had with rapper Kanye West and his wife, Kim Kardashian, who called him about the plight of the hip-hop star. A$AP Rocky, whose real name is Rakim Mayers, 30, was detained on assault charges after a fight outside a downtown Stockholm nightclub on July 3. Prosecutors have asked the judge to hold the platinum-selling, Grammy-nominated rapper in pretrial detention until July 25.

However, in an interview with reporters before Saturday's call, the prime minister warned that while would welcome a conversation about the rapper's incarceration, there wasn't much he could do to sway the prosecutors or courts.

"I will explain that the Swedish judicial system is independent," he told reporters. "In Sweden, everyone is equal before the law, and this includes visitors from other countries."

Public support for A$AP Rocky has come from all corners, including The State Department, members of congress, and celebrities such as West, Kardashian, Cardi B, Post Malone, Travis Scott, Tyler, the Creator and A$AP Ferg.
