Hurricane Erin Roars Northwest as Cat 4 Storm, Affecting Florida Coastline

August 18, 2025 — Hurricane Erin, the first major hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic season, continues to churn through the Atlantic as a powerful Category 4 storm, posing serious threats to parts of the Caribbean and the southeastern Bahamas. According to the National Hurricane Center’s 5 a.m. advisory, Erin is located approximately 110 miles northeast of Grand Turk Island and 935 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

While Erin is forecast to weaken slightly beginning tonight, it will remain a large and dangerous hurricane through midweek. The storm is not expected to make landfall in the U.S., but its outer effects—especially surf and wind—will be felt along coastal regions from Florida to the Carolinas.

Hazards and Impacts

  • Rainfall: Puerto Rico may receive an additional 1–2 inches of rain today, with localized flooding possible.
  • Surf & Rip Currents: Life-threatening surf and rip currents are expected along the U.S. Eastern Seaboard, Bahamas, and Atlantic Canada throughout the week2.
  • Wind Field:
    • Hurricane-force winds extend up to 60 miles from the center.
    • Tropical-storm-force winds reach out 230 miles.
