Salvation Army Stocking Disaster Vehicles

Realizing the need could be great if Hurricane Dorian takes a turn and wreaks havoc on the east coast, some trained volunteers are ready to kick into high gear.

Already on stand-by, two Salvation Army of Broward County disaster vehicles are being stocked today with 500 meals so the crew can start serving as soon as they arrive in a devastated region.

Once fully up and running the mobile feeding units can serve 1,500 meals a day.

Director of Development Alyse Gossman says, "We can do a lot with a little. We will be sending about five people locally, but throughout the state of Florida we have a fleet of 3,000 volunteers and 30 mobile kitchens."

Once packed, they can deploy in just a couple of hours.

Along with providing food, the team members are also trained to offer emotional and spiritual care to survivors and first responders.

Because the unpredictability of Dorian, where they'll be heading remains a question. "So we're not sure where we'll be called, it's going to be Florida, North Carolina, beyond, but we are ready to do so," stresses Gossman.

The Salvation Army's international headquarters is working on relief efforts for the Bahamas.

If you want to help, you're asked to make a monetary donation because, "We don't know what the needs of the area that's going to be impacted are."

Gossman says, "100% of all donations that are designated for disaster relief go to disaster relief. We do not take an administrative percentage off of that. So you really are really helping the most amount of people with your donations."
