(Miami Beach, FL) - A group of Jewish mayors is meeting today on Miami Beach to kick off a new association formed to combat anti-Semitism.
Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner is chairing the Jewish Mayors and Municipal Leaders Association (JMMLA) and points to a record increase in attacks against Jewish heritage.
Meiner is an Orthodox Jewish leader who has been re-elected twice as Miami Beach Mayor. He says through JMMLA, mayors around the country can fight for the safety of Jews.
“Any racism, hate, bigotry or anti-Semitism that we’re seeing explode in our country is a danger to our country and we’re looking to work together to eradicate it,” Meiner tells WPLG.
He says JMMLA gives Jewish elected officials a platform to take on the haters whose actions cannot be ignored.
“History has taught the Jewish people the cost of silence. As mayors and municipal leaders, we have a responsibility to confront antisemitism, defend democratic values and ensure every resident feels safe and protected in our communities.” according to Meiner.
A formal proclamation ceremony and press conference will be held Monday afternoon at 1 pm at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden.
