(Miami, FL) - Governor Ron DeSantis announcing Friday that Alligator Alcatraz is currently at half-capacity with 2-thousand detainees and deportation flights have begun.

DeSantis says once Alligator Alcatraz hits 3-thousand detainees, he will open Camp Blanding in Clay County as another migrant detention camp. This as Miami-Dade's mayor is demanding immediate access to the site and alleging unsafe conditions and inhumane treatment.

Director of Emergency Management Kevin Guthrie says the facility is air conditioned and can withstand a Category Two hurricane. In addition, Guthrie says all detainees receive three hot meals a day and full medical care. This as Miami-Dade's mayor is demanding immediate access to the site and alleging unsafe conditions and inhumane treatment.

DeSantis responds to Miami-Dade's mayor demanding immediate access to the site and alleging unsafe conditions and inhumane treatment saying,

"This is not a spectacle, you don't get to go into other facilities willy-nilly either." He says politicians have already had access to the camp which he says is being run very well.

Here are Mayor Daniella Levine Cava's demands:

  • Immediate access to the site where I can visit within 48 hours, in addition to designated County officials, including staff from the Department of Environmental Resources Management (DERM), County Attorneys, and representatives from the Department of Emergency Management.
  • A comprehensive briefing from your agency on current operations, including the nature of any agreements with contractors, timelines for construction, and the anticipated population growth and security protocols. This also includes a copy of any policies for onsite medical care and medical evacuation for detainees.
  • Weekly reporting to the County on environmental impacts, security incidents, and population data.
  • Remote video monitoring or third-party access for ongoing observation in compliance with federal and state environmental and human rights regulations

Meanwhile, DeSantis says the camp has high turnover with deportation flights taking off day and night. He says all detainees are being held on a final removal order. So far, DeSantis says there have been 100-full deportations out of Alligator Alcatraz with hundreds of others transferred to hubs.
