Investigators are looking into how a Brightline high-speed passenger train collided with a Delray Beach Fire Rescue ladder truck.

Fire Chief Ronald Martin says firefighters and passengers were injured in the collision just before 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 29.

"There were three firefighters that were transported [to Delray Medical Center]," he said. "Two of them were trauma alerted or deemed critical at the scene, [but] their status has since been upgraded to stable condition."

Chief Martin added the crew was responding to an unspecified emergency alarm at the time.

"At this point, all of that information is being investigated through a multi-agency, multi-partner investigative process," he said.

Some reports had up to a dozen train passengers being treated for minor injuries.

The collision happened near the 100-block of East Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach.

The fire department's ladder truck was flipped on its side amid a debris field.
