Palm Beach County Schools Revisit Equity Statement Over Parents' Concerns

A special meeting of the Palm Beach County School Board will be held this week to discuss a new equity statement that was just approved a couple of weeks ago.

Parents are upset about a line that reads: “The School District of Palm Beach County is committed to dismantling structures rooted in white advantage.”

Parents spoke out at last week's meeting when the topic was brought up after midnight.

"We should not be ashamed from what the color of our skin looks like. We are children of God."

Board Chairman Frank Barbieri spoke out in favor of changing the wording.

"All the other good stuff we had in the equity statement, with that one line in the middle, has turned it into a racial statement. It is not going over well with the public."

At least one other member has spoken out in favor of changing the wording.

Board Member Alexandria Ayala said the statement is all about "children and families who have been for generations marginalized and not given the same access to opportunities."

This Wednesday's meeting on the equity statement starts at 1 p.m. and is open to the public.
