United Teachers Of Dade Calling On Superintendent To Close Schools

Miami-Dade teachers concerned about the coronavirus are hoping Superintendent Alberto Carvalho closes school. This after an after care employee at a school in Bay Harbor Islands tests positive for the virus. United Teachers of Dade President Karla Hernandez-Mats says the teachers shouldn't be punished if they are nervous about coming in. She's calling on its bargaining unit to exercise their contractual rights for employee safety which allows them to opt of out their duties in the event of having their safety or health threatened. She says school should be closed Monday for the week because the following week is spring break so that would give everyone a 14-day quarantine. Carvalho is expected to hold a news conference at the school board this afternoon.
