Several Florida Cities Launch Straw Bans In 2020

Several Florida cities have straw bans going into effect in the new year.

In Key West, enforcement begins on a ban that started in September.

Miami Beach begins its six-month warning period on Wednesday.

In Stuart, restaurants will have a full year to continue providing single-use plastic straws, but by request only.

"We love our businesses. We care about our businesses and our small business owners and we didn't want to put undue an inordinate pressure on them. We wanted to give ample time for everybody to adjust."

While Mayor Mike Meier says the straws are not the biggest concern, it's a start.

"It's really just the waste generated by single-use straws in general."

In 2021, restaurants will be allowed to make alternative items, like paper or bamboo straws, available. But even then, Meier says those will be by request only.

"We wanted to make sure that we're not just creating more trash and more waste by changing from a plastic single-use straw to a paper one. We want people to say 'do we really need the straw at all?'"

Ultimately, he hopes people will simply skip the straw.

Businesses in Sunny Isles Beach have an extra day to give out plastic straws. That city's ban goes into effect on Thursday.
