School Deputy Saves Choking Child in Brooksville

BROOKSVILLE -- A school resource deputy saves a child's life at an elementary school in Hernando County.

The sheriff's office says the four year old boy started choking during breakfast Tuesday morning at the cafeteria of Eastside Elementary School in Brooksville.

A pre-kindergarten teacher grabbed the child and ran toward deputy Christopher Downey... who, when he heard no sounds, quickly struck the boy five times on the back... then grabbed him in front and used the Heimlich maneuever. A piece of food popped out and the child, who is nonverbal, began making noises.

The school nurse medically cleared the child, who returned to class.
