Attorneys for a former school resource officer say he had no obligation to confront the Parkland school shooter.
Scot Peterson faces charges that include child neglect after his decision not to go into the building at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where police say Nikolas Cruz was shooting to death 17 students and staff members on Valentine's Day last year.
In court papers filed last week, Peterson's lawyers wrote that prosecutors stretched the laws "beyond their breaking points" when they charged him in the case.
Attorney Joseph DiRuzzo claims his client was the deputy assigned to the school, not the students' legal caregiver and that Broward Sheriff's Office policy for confronting active shooters says deputies "may" enter a building, not "shall".
