Mast's Bill Would Mandate U.S. Army Corps Prioritizes Public Health

Lake Okeechobee

Florida Congressman Brian Mast will introduce a bill on Monday that would mandate that Floridians are notified when toxic water from Lake Okeechobee is released into coastal rivers.

Mast's office says the proposed legislation would require the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to prioritize public health when making decisions affecting Florida's waterways.

Just last week, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection confirmed hazardous toxin levels in Lake Okeechobee and experts are concerned that fish caught in the lake may not be safe to eat.

Monday's announcement will be made in Stuart on Florida's Treasure Coast, where toxic algae has caused problems in past summers.
