Wounded Warriors Compete as Athletes in Tampa This Week

TAMPA -- Hundreds of wounded service members and veterans are heading to Tampa later this week for the Warrior Games. Staff Sergeant Lauren Montoya of Special Operations Command says it's part of the ongoing recovery process for wounded warriors.

The Paralympic style events include wheelchair rugby, golf and a cycling event down Tampa's Bayshore Boulevard.

14 sports in all... the games run June 21st through the 30th... all of the paralympic-style athletic events are free to the public.

Comedian Jon Stewart is the master of ceremonies. The opening and closing ceremonies are the only events that require a ticket purchase.

The Warrior Games rotate among various branches of the service. Special Operations Command, based in Tampa, is included in the rotation because of the large number of casualties it has suffered in the post-September 11th era.
