Free Samples Will Be Returning To Costco In June

Costco announced they are planning to bring free samples back to their stores in mid-June. The big-box retailer stopped offering the free samples on April 6 due to the global coronavirus pandemic. As a result, thousands of employees who worked for Club Demonstration Services, a third-party company contracted by Costco, were laid off.

The decision also upset many customers, who enjoyed walking the aisles and grabbing bite-size samples as they shopped.

When the samples do return to the stores, the experience will be a bit different as the company must alter how they hand them out to comply with social distancing guidelines.

"We're going to start doing some things in mid-June on a slow rollout basis in sampling," Costco CFO Richard Galanti said during the company's quarterly earnings call. "I can't tell you anymore, but needless to say, it's not going to be where you go and just pick up an open sample with your fingers."

Galanti did not provide any other details about the plans to bring free samples back to the stores.
