Federal Judge Freezes DACA

posted by Bill Strange -

A federal district court judge in New York ruled yesterday that people enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program are likely to win their court challenge on narrow legal grounds.  The program protects immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children.  President Trump is challenging lawmakers to draw up a measure to protect young Dreamers before the March 5th end of the program enacted in 2012 by President Obama's executive order.

Last month, a California judge ruled the Trump administration must continue accepting renewal applications.  President Trump tweeted this week, "Wouldn't it be great if we could finally, after so many years, solve the DACA puzzle. This will be our last chance, there will never be another opportunity!"  The Republican proposal calls for a merit-based immigration system.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer says Democrats are indeed looking for a bipartisan solution to immigration reform.
